Why is Nebulized Medication Better?

If you or your child suffers from asthma, COPD, CF or another respiratory condition, you may be prescribed a nebulizer.  While many people are familiar with meter dose inhalers (MDI) for treating respiratory conditions, some patients benefit from nebuliser treatment for a variety of reasons. 

First, using a traditional inhaler takes a great deal of coordination to work properly.  This is especially difficult for young and old patients who may not be able to follow directions or lack the coordination needed to breathe in deeply at the right time.  Second, nebulizer treatments are more efficient because they provide a slower yet more consistent delivery of the medication.  With the use of a mask, the patient can sit back and relax while receiving his medication.  A third reason to use nebulized medicine is that the dosage that is actually received into the lungs is more predictable. The medicine is aerosolized into tiny particles that can be efficiently absorbed through the lungs.

If you have been prescribed both a nebulizer treatment and a fast acting inhaler, you can improve the effectiveness of your inhaler treatment by using a Holding Chamber.
